like aristotle and aristhophanesWhy is it probably true that the Greeks produced more art forms that we shall ever know?
Hmmm, interesting question.
I'd say it's probably true that the Greeks produced more art forms that we shall ever know BECAUSE.......
It was the real first modern society.
Modern thinkers come up with all kinds of stuff, a lot of which really never ';catch on'; with the general public.
I mean, seriously, is the Pet Rock or the Giga-Pet going to be remembered for prosperity 2000 years from now?
With their known art forms.... theater, philosophy, art education, architecture, building, pottery/ceramics, weaponry design etc.
They could have quite easily had produced other things that didn't catch on, wasn't as popular, didn't stand passage of time....but I'd have to say that Greece withstood the ages and there is MUCH known about them. I'd be really surprised if something surfaced in the way of an art form that we had NO prior knowledge OF.
One thing the Ancient Greeks DID leave us was INFORMATION, and tons of it.
Oh, things have been lost...war, fire, invasion, etc but even alot of it we still have a knowledge of even if we've never seen it.
But as a COMPLETE ART FORM? As in a Form of Art we are not familar WITH.....pieces, sure, but FORMS...?
If they DID produce other art forms we have no knowledge OF, they probably weren't significant. Why is it probably true that the Greeks produced more art forms that we shall ever know?
For one thing, Greece has been settled by many different etnnic qroups over the course of its long history. Aside from the Homeric epics the Mycenaean period remains obscure to us, only a few tombs have been found. The paintings during the period of Periclean Athens have all been lost, and when Rome conquered Greece, they probably looted the entire country. Several times the treasure at Delphi was stolen by barbarian invaders.
And then there were the many thousands of works that perished when the Library of Alexandria burned down.
Because we only have a tiny percentage of the total literature or art produced by the Greeks. Most of the material has been lost. It is reasonable to assume that a great deal of very fine art or literature was produced and will never be enjoyed.
