I'm of the yes it was believers. Others are not so sure. It could have been used for alot of purposes, such as gold leafing, soldering, or any number of things. There's the Baghdad Battery, the Parthian Battery, even an ancient spark plug, highly corroded was once found.

'Raiders of the lost ark'
Yeah its called a lemon
yeah
if so, what did they use it for?
No, the fact that the component parts was found in the same general area is true.

But whether they used it for a battery is doubtful, what would they use a battery for?

No bulbs for light,

No electric motors,

No nothing!
';The earliest known artifacts that may have been batteries are the Baghdad Batteries, from some time between 250 BC and 640 AD. The modern development of batteries started with the Voltaic pile developed by the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in 1800.';

';Such ancient knowledge in the history of electricity bears no known continuous relationship to the development of modern batteries. The hypothesis that these devices had an electrical function, while plausible, remains unproven, as with devices discovered in Egyptian digs that are alleged to be batteries as well. There are no writings or drawings or other evidence such as wires or electroplated objects to substantiate the proposed use of the objects as electrical cells.';

So the answer, according to Wikipedia, is no. The earliest battery use occured closer to 2,250 years ago.
Yes. there was a special on The History Channel not to long ago.
