Is it true that in nature, homosexuality is a form of population control?

I can't remember where I read this, but I recall that, in nature, if a species becomes too numerous then the percentage of homosexuals will increase, so that over-breeding is combatted. Is there any truth to this?Is it true that in nature, homosexuality is a form of population control?
I don't think there's truth to this, no. Perhaps it's true in some species I've forgotten about; there are certainly studies in which various odd organisms switch gender based on environmental conditions.

This isn't my field, but when I browse articles in Science, the occasional one describing homosexuality in non-human animals just tends to observe that it occurs, not that it's a form of population control. I may incorrectly recall that overcrowding leads to more homosexual behavior in some animals, but I don't think it leads to less heterosexual behavior or to population control. It may be Rat Stress Relief. Is it true that in nature, homosexuality is a form of population control?
The human population has never stopped increasing - see link below. After 10,000 before present day the population growth really takes off as the rise of civilisation occurs and we spread out around the world in greater numbers. Hyman's ability to use tools and intelligence to overcome challenges meant to population could just keep on increasing - and all the better! A population needs to reproduce to make it more likely to continue the species and, theoretically, reaches a balance with its environment when it reaches its capacity. Humans didn't, and still don't need to do this - we can out do the factors that limit population growth. Homosexuality is only partially genetic and environmental factors cannot be passed on. A population never evolves for the group as a whole as the key factor is survival of the fittest - it doesn't matter about everyone else, each individual is out for itself so homosexuality, and the urge to NOT reproduce would not be considered beneficial. So I'd say no.
I have not heard the ';population control'; idea. However, I have heard of recent research that shows that the gene that encourages homosexuality in males of various species of animals increases the sex drive and the fertility of females.

This means, while the sons are gay, the daughters are hyper-sexual. If you think about it, this also discourages inbreeding, which is detrimental to the gene pool.
Well I am in a same-sex relationship but was previously married and have two children - so if that is the case, it obviously doesn't work! Actually, I don't think there is a single ';reason'; for being gay. It is simply programming with, like so many factors in being human - no rhyme or reason.
Its one theory, but if you think about it, its a pretty lame form of population control, considering one straight man could theoretically impregnate women one all day every day. Population control in nature is based around predators, breeding in season etc etc.
Lol i never heard of that theory. But it could be true. I would believe if you have too many of one gender in an area and limited ones of another homosexuality is strongly possible to happen
Nope i cannot beleve this theory, i think percentage of homosexuals SEEMS increasing becos of more acceptance bi the society.
I never heard of such a thing, but it may be true. You should check the literature (PUBMED or other scientific journals) to see if that claim is true.
Give us a kiss and I'll tell you. Only kidding...honest!!
